Thomas Enfield's Hymns, 1772

1. Angel! roll the rock away;
Death, yield up thy mighty prey;
See he rises from the tomb;
Glowing in immortal bloom.

2. Tis the Savior, angels, raise
Fame's eternal trump of praise,
Let the world's remotest bound
Hear the joy-inspiring sound.

3. Shout, ye saints, in rapturous song
Let the strains be sweet and strong;
Shout the Son of God, this morn
From his sepulcher new born.

4. Hail, victorious Jesus, hail!
On thy cloud of glory sail
In long triumph through the sky
Up to waiting worlds on high.

5. Heaven displays her portals wide,
Glorious hero, through them ride;
King of glory, mount the throne,
Thy great Father's, and thy own.

6. Powers of heaven, seraphic fires
Sing and sweep your sounding lyres;
Sons of men, in humble strain,
Sing your mighty Savior's reign.

7. Every note with wonder swell;
Sin overthrown and captived hell!
Where is hell's once dreaded king?
Where, O death, thy mortal sting?

"Hallelujah" after each stanza

Thomas Scott, Lyric Poems, 1773
Trembling earth gave awful sign;
Down from heaven a form divine
Flashed; the lightning of his look
Terror in the soldiers struck.

Angel, roll the rock away;
Death yield up thy mighty prey:
See! He rises from the tomb,
Glowing with immortal bloom.

“Tis the Savior! angel, raise
Fame's eternal trump of praise:
Let the world's remotest bound
Hear the joy-inspiring sound.

Shout, ye saints, in rapturous song,
Let the strains be sweet and strong:
Shout the Son of God, this morn
From his sepulcher new-born.

Hail, victorious Jesu, hail;
On thy cloud of glory sail
In long triumph through the sky,
Up to waiting worlds on high.

Heaven displays her portals wide,
Glorious hero, through them ride;
King of glory, mount the throne,
Thy great father's and thy own.

Powers of heaven, seraphic fires,
Sing, and sweep your golden lyres.:
Sons of men, in humbler strain,
Sing your mighty Savior's reign.

Every note with wonders swell,
Sin overthrown and captived hell:
Where is hell's once dreaded king?
Where, O death, thy mortal sting?

Thomas Gibbons, unknown date
