Editors: Jonathan Goodliffe and Mick Swithinbank (submitted 2017-04-19).   Score information: A4, 15 pages, 108 kB   Copyright: CPDL
Edition notes: The chirimias and the sackbut are transposed in the source. In this edition the chirimias have been transposed down a perfect fourth and the sackbut up a perfect 5th to achieve what seems to have been the intended performing pitch.

General Information

Title: Magnificavit eum
Composer: Francisco Valls

Number of voices: 11vv   Voicing: SAT.SATB.SATB
Genre: SacredResponsory

Language: Latin
Instruments: Mixed ensemble

First published:
Description: A responsory described as “a 14”. The 3 parts in the 4th choir, however, are clearly intended to be instrumental (chirimias – a species of shawm and sackbut - an early form of trombone). The manuscript does not set the text to the bass parts in the 2nd and 3rd choir. These parts are described as “ministriles”, indicating that they were intended to be played by instruments as well as, or instead of, voices. Uses the same combination of voices as "Missa a 11". So the two works may have been intended to be sung on the same occasion.

He magnified him in front of kings
And he girded him with a crown of glory
He established him as an everlasting testament.
He pronounced him happy in glory.
