New Version
General Information
Description: The New Version is a short name for a metrical psalter in common use in English-speaking countries from the end of the seventeenth century to the middle nineteenth century. It was intended to replace the Old Version of the sixteenth century. The New Version was eventually replaced by the psalm paraphrases of Isaac Watts (beginning in 1719) and other authors, although a few New Version Psalms remain in use (Psalms 34, 42, 95, and 148, for example). Early editions vary in certain Psalms (see table below).
A Supplement was added in 1700, which included many tunes. Because of this, it is a separate publication, A Supplement to the New Version of Psalms.
