English text
Harness the pony, dear,
and get your bonnet on,
it is our market day.
The fat, old pig which will ride behind in state
and swell our weekly pay.
I will catch the broody hen,
She tucks the corn away
I will drive the Kerry cow
which will never pay to keep,
She yields a quart a day.
I shall tell the poor old cow
we have also got to think about our quarter day.
I will harness the pony
And get my bonnet on,
It is our market day.
You will take our donkey Ned,
for he’s nothing much to do
and fat too much to say.
I have harness'd in the pony.
But, John, what shall I do?
My bonnet's gone astray Man!
What nonsense you do talk,
For I cannot go to town
without my bonnet gay.
Harness the woman
What matters that to me?
You would drive a man to drink,
We surely must away.
I have harness'd the pony
I've got my bonnet on,
It is our market day.
