General Information

Title: Shepherd's Lullaby
Composer: Maggie Furtak
Lyricist: Maggie Furtak

Number of voices: 4vv   Voicing: SATB
Genre: SecularLullaby

Language: English
Instruments: A cappella

First published: 2015
Description: For SATB with a few notes of divisi for soprano and bass. Includes a piano reduction for rehearsal purposes. The range is very reasonable for all parts, but if you have some strong soprano and bass voices, you could try taking the whole piece up a step, to get the alto part into a more resonant part of the range. Strive for good balance between sections throughout, bringing out the text and interesting moving lines where it makes sense. (I like to keep dynamic markings to a minimum to avoid cluttering up the score. Do what makes sense for your singers and your acoustical space.) I always appreciate feedback. If you try this piece, please let me know how you like it. Particularly anything that seemed unnecessarily difficult or that could have been more clearly marked. Enjoy!

The sheep is a genius of place;
why would she stray?
Here is the homeland. Here her mother's house.

(Feed my sheep. Lead them home. Let them rest.)

Sisters, all among the hills, chanting their Daily Office:
"There the rain licks into little pools, there a dip to hide new lambs."
"Take my coat," she said. "You are a guest."
