Copyright status?
I'm a little concerned about the copyright status of Vaughan Williams works in the US. Even though, for example, the Five Mystical Songs are Copyright 1911 in the UK, since Vaughan Williams died in 1958, they would not enter public domain in the UK until 2028. What concerns me about the US situation is that the quoted rules for US copyright refer to works published in the US (which I take to mean, first published). Berne and GATT agreements seem to suggest that the US copyright regulations generally defer the copyright laws of other countries (participant to the conventions). What further bothers me is that the editions posted here appear to be simply PDF facsimiles of the original Stainer & Bell editions with all the Stainer & Bell copyright information removed and a blurb "This PDF courtesy..." with no copyright information at all affixed. -- Chucktalk Giffen♫ 02:28, 9 June 2008 (PDT)
- You may also note that the "courtesy of" domain www.artsongcentral.com is registered but not active any more. The name of the registrant, David Newman, links to another domain, www.davidnewman.info, that is also registered but not active. In my opinion, these are not good signs. I wonder if this website had some copyright troubles, which then may "propagate" to CPDL, too. --Choralia 04:21, 9 June 2008 (PDT)

- From David Newman's note on his User page referred to above, it seems clear that he does not want CPDL to (re)host the PDF files but just link to the pages on his Art Song Central site. I've a left a note on John Henry Fowler's talk page about this.
