Template:NewWork

Hi Chuck. Your recent edits to the above template seem to have messed it up so I've reverted them for the moment. I figured on a template so widely used, it was best to revert even for the short term. Cheers --Bobnotts talk 00:21, 1 July 2008 (PDT)

Hi Rob. Thanks for reverting the template. I had noticed something was wrong this morning when one goes to, say Category:2008-06-30, and I had finally tracked it down to Template:NewWork, but didn't have time to finish straightening things out. It all seems to have stemmed from an attempt to add a sortkey 9, which was botched (and probably not necessary, although the intent was to have say "The Haven" sort under "Haven, The"). I'll think about it later. -- Chucktalk Giffen 04:16, 1 July 2008 (PDT)
Hi Chuck, please have a look at a test I am doing with this template to make it date-conditional. I made use of another template named IsNew that tests the passed parameter date against a range of dates and returns "yes" or "no" as the answer. It's in fact a very simple and, unfortunately, non-automated template, but which has the advantage of being backward-compatible, since it accepts as parameter a date in the format yyyy-mm-dd. The negative part is that it would require a monthly maintenance in order to add/remove one month from each extremity of the test values. It is set now to answer "yes" to dates ranging from 2008-07-31 to one year back. I suppose you'd like to extend it to two years, if it gets approved by you and Rob. --Carlos huh? 04:34, 12 July 2008 (PDT)
Hi Carlos. I thought about using almost exactly such coding as in Template:IsNew, but felt that the necessity of maintaining the template every month, more-or-less, would put yet another burden on the admins, amd I suppose I was hoping that we could implement something that was backward-compatible, even though it might require another parameter, which would at least take effect down the road. The advantage of the IsNew mechanism is that it immediately takes care of the stale NewWork icons and listing. I guess it's a question of trade-offs, and I'm inclined to leave your coding intact, at least for the present, and wait for others to weigh in on the mattter. -- Chucktalk Giffen 22:12, 12 July 2008 (PDT)
Hi Chuck, I know this is not what we both had in mind, but given the lack of functionality of this wiki instalation, that's perhaps the only option we have, though we can keep trying to find a better solution anyway. At least the maintenance will be restricted to just one page instead of all the old score pages. :) --Carlos huh? 03:04, 13 July 2008 (PDT)

Alto clef for awkward work...

Alto clef.gif The Alto Clef award
for techie work essential to the functioning of CPDL

is hereby awarded to Chuck Giffen for regular improvements and additions to the templates used on CPDL which allow it to function so well. — Bobnotts talk 23:54, 1 July 2008 (PDT)

Oh, wow, thank you, Rob! And I had hoped (or envisioned) the A in alto might stand for "altruism" ... but I quite relish your take on it! Again, many thanks. -- Chucktalk Giffen 23:58, 1 July 2008 (PDT)
Ha ha - I like "awkward work" because I remember learning to read the alto clef for my grade 5 theory exam and thinking "why on earth would anyone want to use this clef?". So, an award for complicated work executed precisely (not a comment on the awardee's character!) Do you think it's worth making these awards into templates? I don't expect they'll get used that often but it might be worth it. I could do it if you're busy... --Bobnotts talk 00:44, 2 July 2008 (PDT)
I did have in mind setting up some award templates when I uploaded the various clef images, and maybe a page that describes them, with recommendations as to using them, with links to the templates. Now that someone else thinks it might be a good idea, I think we can get to work on it (although it's not a high priority item), cribbing from the Wikipedia barnstars treatment. -- Chucktalk Giffen 01:30, 2 July 2008 (PDT)

Iñigo Igualador compositions

Hi Chuck, have you seen the scores uploaded by User:Desconocido? (whose name, by the way, is Spanish for "Unknown"). They have a copyright notice that reads: © Ed. "El Sanedrín - PANDERGÓ" S.L - Queda prohibida toda copia y/o reproducción de esta partitura sin permiso expreso del editor (Prohibited any copy and/or reproduction of this score without express authorization of the editor). Would it be the case to delete them? Unless of course "Desconocido" is the composer himself, but how can we know it for sure? Just asking him? --Carlos huh? 08:17, 21 July 2008 (PDT)

Yes, I think we have to ask him, making note of your observation about copyright, and with a condition that, if there is now reply within one week (or other period, at your discretion), then all will be removed. Does this sound fair? -- Chucktalk Giffen 08:30, 21 July 2008 (PDT)
Chuck, your proposal sounds quite fair, I'll write him about this. I'd just wait a bit longer, who knows how long will it take for him to log in again and read my message. What about one month? Since there's no score page yet, people won't find the PDFs so easily. Regards. --Carlos huh? 01:21, 22 July 2008 (PDT)
Hi Carlos. One month is fine. The PDF links are on the composer page. I'm off now, driving to and from Madison today to pick up my son from UW-Madison orientation - about 550 miles round trip in one day!! -- Chucktalk Giffen 01:28, 22 July 2008 (PDT)

nowiki

Hi Chuck. When you've got a minute, would you mind looking at Help:CPDL Templates? I've been using the "nowiki" tag and can't work out why it isn't affecting some template names the way it has done for others... --Bobnotts talk 07:34, 28 July 2008 (PDT)

Hi Rob. That page is big enough and my cursory look apparently so short that I'm not sure where you are having the nowiki problems. Could you be more specific? I'll take another longer look when I get a chance. -- Chucktalk Giffen 09:47, 28 July 2008 (PDT)

 Help

I was able to fix two entries by moving the nowiki ending symbol outside the squiggly brackets. You had:
| <tt><nowiki>{{Editor| and placed the ending nowiki entry here. I moved it to:
| <tt><nowiki>{{Editor|''name''|''date''}} here. Otherwise, since it was in a table, I think the vertical bars just after the ending nowiki symbol were being interpreted as indications about table formatting rather than being reprinted literally. HTH. I'll go through and fix the others on that page in moments. I think it's always safest to put the nowiki brackets outside the entire curly brackets expression.

Apologies for swithcing to the Reply template mid-discussion, but my line breaks looked funny using : with tt.

Sorry for not being more specific, Chuck. I've managed to solve the problem myself now. And Vaarky, what you changed didn't actually solve the problem because I was trying to italicise the variables, rather than make the '' appear... but it's ok, I've fixed it now. --Bobnotts talk 19:24, 28 July 2008 (PDT)

Test templates

Hi Chuck. I've just been doing some work updating the manual list of CPDL templates and stumbled across the following templates which seem to have been created by you as tests and then fallen by the wayside: Template:NW, Template:CPDL and Template:Network. Can we delete these now or do you have some plans for them? --Bobnotts talk 07:29, 29 July 2008 (PDT)

Hi Rob. They are indeed obsolete, and I have just deleted them and removed the square brackets around them in your post. Thanks for pointing these out.

Score requests

Hi Chuck. I've just made a correction to ChoralWiki:ScoreRequest: here. I guess you must have changed the first name variables and not updated the template page. User:Vaarky had a problem with a request she made which prompted me to correct the page but then I noticed that clicking on the discussion tab of the request page sends one to the (uncreated) score page, rather than a discussion page. Is this intentional? I moved her message to her talk page. --Bobnotts talk 07:15, 31 July 2008 (PDT)

Hi Rob. No, I goofed! -- Chucktalk Giffen 12:01, 31 July 2008 (PDT)

Translations

Hi Chuck, i am trying to add translations. I am good at translating but not at adding. E.g. how do i add that nice dutch flag? I am new here transnico Transnico 03:46, 10 August 2008 (PDT)

Hi transnico. Vaarky has already replied on your talk page with the information you need, together with more information on the process of adding translations or texts to score pages. Again, thank you for your contributions!

{{SERVER}} vs. {{filepath}}

Hi Chuck, please don't edit the image links yet replacing the site part with {{SERVER}}. As soon as we update the wiki software, we'll be able to use {{filepath}} instead with greater advantages: even shorter links and a complete independence from directory structure. Compare for instance the Italian flag ( Italian.png ):

  1. http://www.cpdl.org/wiki/images/8/86/Italian.png
  2. {{SERVER}}/wiki/images/8/86/Italian.png     <== still depends on directory structure
  3. {{filepath:Italian.png}}

Now just imagine that someone deletes the Italian.png image for mistake. Even if he uploads a new one with exactly the same name, the image absolute address will be different (say, "./images/0/01/Italian.png") and links #1 and #2 would render invalid, while link #3 would still work.  Help

Okay Carlos. Sorry I already changed the flags & images. I know we don't have filepath on the old version, but was thinking that if we copy the present site over to a test bed for upgrading, at least the images would be portable and visible instead of blank. If we do wholesale changes via MySQL queries (which I now know can be done, because I now remember that Raf changed the williams server links this way once), the ones that have been tagged server should still be detectible via the fact that they would begin with {{SERVER}}/wiki/images?. If you prefer, though, I'll just go back and change them to what they were before. I should point out that there were some already existing instances of {{SERVER}} being used here, though.

Hi Chuck, please don't do that, your changes were for the better and should by no means be reverted, it's just that eventually we'll have to re-edit those templates again to change to {{filepath}}; but your reasoning makes total sense, it will be good if the images are visible on the new test site, as you said, and that makes it worth the extra step. —Carlos Email.gif 03:10, 21 September 2008 (PDT)
