Biography

Vianney Sicard is a French pianist, organist, conductor and composer.

He began playing the piano on his own at the age of fourteen and achieved notable success by winning two national piano competitions at the age of sixteen. Subsequently, he commenced organ lessons with Abbé Gabriel Niel, who held the position of choir organist at Nantes Cathedral. He then advanced to the postgraduate level in the organ class of Pascale Mélis at the Nantes Conservatory. Additionally, he pursued studies under Christian Villeneuve in the field of composition and Gérard Chenuet in music analysis. Alongside his musical education, he pursued mathematics at the Faculty of Science in Nantes. However, he made the decision to discontinue his mathematical studies and fully dedicate himself to music. Fuelled by his passion for vocal art, he enrolled in Paul Colléaux's conducting and singing classes. He garnered first prizes in organ and composition, leading him to secure admission to the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique, where he studied analysis with Mickaël Lévinas. His studies also encompassed renaissance analysis, musical culture, and art history. After obtaining his analysis prize, he concluded his tenure at the CNSM in Paris.

Vianney Sicard was approached by the Maîtrise de Sainte Anne d'Auray to assume the role of choir director for the pre-master's program, a position he held for three years. Later on, the diocese of Nantes approached him to reestablish the Maîtrise de la Cathédrale. Initially hesitant, he eventually accepted the offer and founded the school, serving as its director and conductor of the choirs for three years.

He held the position of titular organist at St Clair de Nantes and subsequently assumed the same role for the historic organ in Auray. He has performed numerous concerts in France and abroad. Additionally, he has served as an accompanist at several music schools, showcasing his talent as a pianist.

In 2012, Vianney Sicard temporarily halted his musical activities to resume his scientific studies. He successfully obtained a PhD in computer science and epidemiological modelling. This pivotal moment marked a strong shift in Vianney Sicard's choices. He actively engages in amateur music and utilizes his exceptional musical skills to support amateur practice. He creates numerous arrangements for instrumental ensembles, collaborating with various music schools, and composes pedagogical pieces to facilitate the learning of ensemble music, particularly for orchestras. His extensive catalog of works primarily comprises vocal pieces, while his instrumental compositions retain a pronounced vocal character, emphasizing melody and counterpoint. His specialization lies in baroque music, particularly in the realms of counterpoint and German baroque keyboard improvisation, both in theory and practice.
