Voi bramate ch'io moia
ed io morir desio,
pur ch'io vi piaccia almen col morir mio.
ma se trarmi non può di vita fuori
quel vostro empio rigore,
perché prova non fate
d'usarmi invece di rigor pietate?
Che d'uccidermi avrà forza maggiore,
s'huom di piacer più che di doglia more.

You yearn that I die
and I long to die,
provided I please you, at least, with my dying,
but if that cruel rigor of yours
cannot from life severe me.
why do you not try pity instead of rigor?
For it will have far greater power to kill me,
if a man dies more from pleasure than from pain.
