1. Wir Christenleut
haben jetzund Freud,
weil uns zu Trost Christus ist Mensch geboren,
hat uns erlöst.
Wer sich des tröst‘
und glaubet fest, soll nicht werden verloren.

2. Ein Wunderfreud:
Gott selbst wird heut
ein wahrer Mensch von Maria geboren.
Ein Jungfrau zart
sein Mutter ward,
von Gott dem Herren selbst dazu erkoren.

3. Die Sünd macht Leid;
Christus bringt Freud,
weil er zu uns in diese Welt ist kommen.
Mit uns ist Gott
in dieser Not:
Wer ist, der jetzt uns Christen kann verdammen?

4. Drum sage ich Dank
mit mei’m Gesang
Christo dem Herren, der uns zugut Mensch worden,
daß wir durch ihn
nun all los sind
von Sündenlast und unträglichen Bürden.

5.Alleluja,
Alleluja,
singen wir all aus unsers Herzens Grunde.
Denn Gott hat heut
gemacht solch Freud,
der wir vergessen soll’n zu keiner Stunde.

English.png English translation

1. We Christians may
Rejoice today,
When Christ was born to comfort and to save us;
Who thus believes
No longer grieves,
For none are lost who grasp the hope He gave us.

2. O wondrous joy!
That God most high
Should take our flesh, and thus our race should honour;
A virgin mild
Hath borne this Child,
Such grace and glory God hath put upon her.

3. Sin brought us grief,
But Christ relief,
When down to earth He came for our salvation;
Since God with us
Is dwelling thus,
Who dares to speak the Christian's condemnation?

4. Then hither throng,
With happy song,
To him Whose birth and death are our assurance;
Through Whom are we
At last set free
From sins and burdens that surpassed endurance;

5. Yes, let us praise
Our God and raise
Loud hallelujahs to the skies above us
The bliss bestowed
Today by God
To ceaseless thankfulness and joy should move us.

Translation by Catherine Winkworth, 1863
