General Information

Title: Missa pro defunctis, 1576
Composer: Giovanni Matteo Asola
Lyricist:

Number of voices: 4vv   Voicing: SATB

Genre: SacredRequiem

Language: Latin
Instruments: A cappella

First published: 1576

Description: A different setting of the Mass for the departed than the setting published in the Collection Misse a quatro voci pari sopra li otto toni... This setting was published as a separate print by A. Gardano in 1576 and reprinted by G. Vincezi and R.Amadini 1585. In style and general conception, these two Requiem masses are close. There is apart from the voicing one major difference. Whereas the Missa pro defunctis in the collection of masses in all eight tones setts the even verses of the sequence Dies irae the 1576 missa sets the odd verses polyphonically leaving the even verses to be sung monodically.
