Ahi, come a un vago Sol cortese giro,
Di duo begli occhi, ond'io
Soffersi il primo, e dolce stral d'Amore,
Pien d'un novo desio,
Sì pronto à sospirar torna il mio core,
Lasso non val ascondersi. Ch'omai
Conosco i segni, che'l mio cor m'addita
De l'antica ferita:
Et è gran tempo pur ch'io la saldai:
Ah, che piaga d'Amor non sana mai.

Giovanni Battista Guarini, Rime (1599), Madrigale 110, p. 60

Engish translation

Alas, just as it was from the lovely single gentle glance
Of two beautiful eyes that I
Suffered my first sweet arrow of love,
Now, full of a new desire,
My heart is once again ready to sigh!
Wretch, there is no point in taking cover, for
I know the signs that my heart points out
Of the ancient wound,
And it has been a long time since I healed it:
Als, for love's wound never heals.

Translation by Massimo Ossi in "Divining the Oracle", 2003, p. 69
