General Information

Title: Clamabat autem mulier channanea
Composer: Pedro de Escobar

Number of voices: 4vv   Voicing: SATB
Genre: SacredMotet

Language: Latin
Instruments: A cappella

First published:
Description: The text is a paraphrase of Matthew 15:22-28 and is designated for the Second Sunday in Lent (apt also for OT 20). To quote Todd Michael Borgerding, 'The 16th-century exegetical tradition portrays this narrative as a parable teaching Christians to reject their heresies and confess faith in the true church'. There is an error in the text of bar 68, where all three voices are shown as having the word 'eunt'. This should read 'eum', as a look at the Vulgate will confirm. Possible error in music: the tenor at the end of bar 39 momentarily clashes with the bass.
