Biography
Frederic Grant Gleason was born in Middletown, Connecticut, son of a banker who was also an amateur musician. He studied with Dudley Buck, and then travelled to Germany to study at the Leipzig Conservatory. Returning to the U.S., he went to Chicago, where he was taught, composed, and was music critic for the Chicago Tribune and other newspapers. He became president of the American Patriotic Musical League and was director of Chicago Auditorium concerts. His compositions include a processional written for the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, a symphonic poem, a tone poem, a piano concerto, a cantata, and two operas.
