Wild Northern Wind! Wind of the Viking’s breath,
Wind of the shining waste, the crimson sky,
Wind of the realm of Ice, where drowsy Death
Touches and claims the weary as they lie.
Strong Warden of the solitudes of Earth
Grim Keeper of the bones of darling men,
What minstrel sings the moment of thy birth?
What herald vaunts thee over moor and fen?
Rude Arctic blast! Clad in the driven white,
Symbol of Truth and Duty’s stern decree.
If in the breast there shine a kindred light;
Although we shudder, we must welcome thee.
Keen Minister of heaven, in toil and pain,
’Neath storm-swept clouds and up the rugged way
Thy voice commands, nor dare we disobey.
