English text
Brightly shine the gems of India,
And the yellow gold is bright;
Sparkling is the diamond’s lustre,
And the pearl is purely white;
But more precious, brighter jewels
Than in distant climes we find,
Far more worthy of our keeping,
Are the jewels of the mind.
Learning gains what gold can never,
Virtue’s purer than the pearl;
And man’s genius flashes brighter
Than the diamond of an Earl:
Fortune gives to few her favors,
But our brows we all may bind,
If we labor well and truly,
With the jewels of the mind.
